Introdução da escritora Bae Su-ah

A escritora Bae Su-ah nasceu em 1965 e se formou em química pela Universidade de Mulheres Ewha. Estreou em 1993 com a obra A Dark Room in 1988 (Um quarto escuro de 1988) publicada na revista Romances e Ideias. É reconhecida como a escritora pioneira na nova gramática dos romances coreanos na década de 1990. Ganhou o 36º Prêmio Literário Hankook Ilbo em 2003 por Sukiyaki de domingo (Sunday at the Sukiyaki Restaurant), o 17º Prêmio Literário Dongseo em 2004 por Auto-Estudioso. É a autora dos livros de contos Highway with Green Apples (Estrada com maçãs verdes), The Owl’s Absence (A ausência da coruja) e Snake and Water (Serpente e água); dos romances Careless Love (Amor descuidado), Cheolsu, The Essayist’s Desk (A mesa do ensaísta), North-Facing Living Room (Sala de estar voltada para o norte), The Low Hills of Seoul (As colinas baixas de seul), Inscrutable Nights and Days (Noites e dias inescrutáveis) e Faraway, Uru Will be Late (De longe, Uru se atrasa); e dos ensaios A Week with Sleeping Man (Uma semana com o homem adormecido) e A First-Meeting Nomad Woman (Primeiro encontro com uma mulher nômade). Também traduziu várias obras escritas em alemão para o coreano, tais como Angstblüte de Martin Walser, Schwindel. Gefühle. de W. G. Sebald, Sonhos de Franz Kafka e The Walker de Robert Walser, entre outros.

About Bae Su-ah

Born in 1965 in Seoul, Bae Suah graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Ehwa Womans University. She made her debut with the short story The Dark Room of 1988 in the literary journal Fiction and Thought. In the 90’s she received recognition as a pioneer for developing a new grammar of Korean fiction. Her novel Sunday at the Sukiyaki Restaurant won the 36th Hankook-ilbo Literature Award, her novel Solitary Scholar won the 17th Dongseo Literary Prize in 2004, and her short story collection Snake and Water won her Today’s Writer Award in 2018. She is the author of numerous books, including the short story collections Highway with Green Apples, North Station, Snake and Water, the novels Carless Love, Nowhere to be found, Greater Music, North-Facing Living Room, Recitation, Untold Night and Day, etc. She is also the author of the essay collections A Week with Sleeping Man and First-Meeting with Nomad Woman. She translates from German into Korean and has published many books by authors such as Martin Walser, Franz Kafka, W. B. Sebald, and Robert Walser.

About 배수아

배수아는 1965년 서울에서 태어나 이화여대 화학과를 졸업했다. 1993년 소설과사상에 『천구백팔십팔년의 어두운 방』을 발표하며 등단하였으며, 1990년대 한국소설의 새로운 문법을 개척한 작가로 인정받고 있다. 『일요일 스키야키 식당』으로 2003년 제36회 한국일보문학상, 『독학자』로 2004년 제17회 동서문학상을, 『뱀과 물』로 2018년 오늘의 작가상을 수상했다. 작품으로는 소설집 『푸른 사과가 있는 국도』, 『올빼미의 없음』, 『뱀과 물』 과 장편소설 『부주의한 사랑』, 『철수』, 『에세이스트의 책상』, 『북쪽 거실』, 『서울의 낮은 언덕들』 『알려지지 않은 밤과 하루』, 등이 있고, 에세이로는 『잠자는 남자와 일주일을』, 『처음 보는 유목민 여인』 등이 있다. 번역가로 활동하며 마르틴 발저 『불안의 꽃』, 제발트 『현기증. 감정들』, 프란츠 카프카 『꿈』, 로베르트 발저 『산책자』 등 다수의 책을 독일어에서 한국어로 옮긴 바 있다.

Noite e dia desconhecidos é o romance de Bae Su-ah, a escritora que celebra o 20º aniversário de sua estreia. A obra é uma prova de que o estilo de romance não narrativo e antinarrativo que a escritora vem experimentando desde os anos 2000, alternando entre contos e romances, foi esteticamente concluído. Criou-se um mundo em que a realidade é transferida para o sonho e se circula dentro da estrutura onírica.
Ayami Kim, uma jovem de 29 anos que trabalha como secretária, em Seul, em um teatro de áudio que está prestes a fechar, fala sobre memórias, sonhos e noites secretas. Embora os eventos entre Ayami e as pessoas que ela conhece sejam o centro da narrativa, a obra retrata um encontro no qual várias personagens, cenários e detalhes são repetidos e variados. Através de frases desconhecidas e belas, características de Bae, desencadeia-se a existência de seres que não são, ou não podem ser, presos por quaisquer limites.

Discussant Luara França

Luara França trabalha no mercado editorial desde 2011. Com mestrado em teoria da história – trabalhando com o conceito de produção de presença de Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht e patrimônio no começo do século XX – seu trabalho de edição é focado em ficção literária. Tanto em autores brasileiros quanto internacionais, ela está sempre procurando novos autores.
Desde 2018 tem editado três selos no grupo Companhia das Letras: Penguin Companhia, focado em clássicos brasileiros e internacionais; Alfaguara, focado em ficção literária e upmarket; e Companhia das Letras.
Sua lista de autores internacionais inclui nomes como Carmen Maria Machado, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Christopher Isherwood, Elizabeth Gilbert, Elizabeth Strout, Haruki Murakami, Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro, Malcolm Lowry, Sally Rooney, Shirley Jackson, e Toni Morrison.
Desde 2020 ela estuda o idioma coreano e a literatura produzida no país. Em 2021, começou um clube de leitura para literatura coreana traduzida em português. Com mais de 100 inscritos, a ideia dos encontros on-line é discutir obras publicadas no Brasil.

About Untold Night and Day

Marking 20 years since her debut, Bae Suah’s novel Unknown Night and Day is the aesthetic culmination of two decades of work experimenting with short stories and novels in her non-historical and anti-narrative style. It is made of a world that circulates in a structure that is a mixture of reality and dreams.
The story follows the memories, dreams, and secret nights of Kim Ayami, a 29 year-old clerk who works at an unusual Seoul audio theatre which is about to close. Even though the narrative is centered on events that happen between Ayami and people she meets, another focus is on the repeat and variate of characters, settings and details in uncanny ways. Through uniquely strange and beautiful use of language, Bae Suah unravels an existence that no border can trap or contain.

Discussant Luara França

Luara França works in publishing since 2011. With a master's in Theory of History – working with Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht concept of production of presence and cultural heritage in the early 20th century – she edits mainly literary fiction. Both for Brazilian and international authors, she is always looking for new voices, with a tint of oddity to their writing.

Since 2018 she has been editor of three imprints in Companhia das Letras Group: Penguin Classics, focusing on Brazilian and international classics in public domain; Alfaguara, focused on Brazilian fiction and upmarket international fiction; and Companhia das Letras, the main imprint with 35 years and focused on literary fiction and nonfiction.

Her list of international authors has names such as Carmen Maria Machado, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Christopher Isherwood, Elizabeth Gilbert, Elizabeth Strout, Haruki Murakami, Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro, Malcolm Lowry, Sally Rooney, Shirley Jackson, and Toni Morrison.

Since 2020 she has been studying the Korean language and reading Korean literature for a future PhD. In 2021 she started an online book club to read Korean literature translated into Brazilian Portuguese. With more than 100 subscribers, the group intends to read all Korean literature translated in the country.

Recently she has been looking to acquire new Korean authors for her list, and is now negotiating two contracts with new and engaging voices of Korean literature.

About 『알려지지 않은 밤과 하루』

등단 20주년을 맞이한 작가 배수아는 소설 『알려지지 않은 밤과 하루』에서 현실이 꿈으로 전이되어 그 안에서 독자적인 구조로 순환되는 세계를 만들어냈다. 이는 그녀가 2000년대에 들어와서부터 단편과 장편을 오가며 실험해온 비서사적ㆍ반서사적 소설 양식이 미학적으로 완성되었음을 보여준다.
작가는 폐관을 앞둔 서울의 오디오 극장에서 사무원으로 일하는 스물아홉 살의 ‘김아야미’를 내세워 기억과 꿈, 그리고 비밀스러운 밤에 대해 이야기한다. 중심 서사는 아야미와 그가 만나는 사람들 사이에서 이루어지는 사건들 이지만 등장인물들, 설정, 세부 사항이 반복되고 변주되는 만남으로 그려지는 것이 작품의 또 다른 핵심이다. 배수아는 특유의 낯설고 아름다운 문장을 통해 어떠한 경계에도 갇히지 않은, 혹은 갇힐 수 없는 존재에 대해 풀어놓는다.

Luara França는 2011년부터 출판계에 몸담아왔다. 한스 울리히 굼브레히트의 '존재 생성' (production of presence) 이론과 20세기 초 문화유산에 대한 연구로 역사이론학 석사 학위를 취득했다. 현재 주로 문학 소설을 편집하며 브라질 안팎에서 독특함이 가미된 새로운 목소리를 찾고 있다. Luara França는 'Companhia das Letras Group'의 3개 임프린트: 1) 저작권이 소멸된 국내외 고전 작품을 다루는 '펭귄 클래식(Penguin Classics)', 2) 브라질 및 해외 픽션 작품에 초점을 맞추는 'Alfaguara', 3) 35년의 역사를 자랑하며 픽션, 논픽션을 총망라하는 'Companhia das Letras'에서 2018년부터 편집자로 활동 해왔다.
그녀가 소개한 해외 작가로는 카먼 마리아 마차도, 치마만다 응고지 아디치에, 크리스토퍼 이셔우드, 엘리자베스 길버트, 엘리자베스 스트라우트, 무라카미 하루키, 이언 매큐언, 가즈오 이시구로, 맬컴 라우리, 샐리 루니, 셜리 잭슨, 토니 모리슨 등 이 있다.
2020년부터 박사 학위를 위해 한국어‧한국문학을 공부하고 있으며, 2021년에 브라질 독자들을 대상으로 포르투갈어로 번역된 한국문학을 읽는 온라인 북클럽을 창설하였다. 현재 100명 넘는 구독자가 브라질에 소개되는 모든 한국문학 번역서를 읽는 것을 목표로 활동 중이다.
새로운 한국 작품을 출간하기 위해 노력하고 있으며, 최근 새롭고 매력적인 목소리를 선보이는 작품을 대상으로 두 건의 출간 계약이 진행 중이다.
